01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Just off the Kappabashi kitchenware district in Nishi-Asakusa, Uruma occupies a quiet spot down a side alley. Set back from heavy tourist traffic, the izakaya has an unpretentious, homestyle atmosphere, filling with neighborhood diners and regulars as dusk settles.

Crisply fried chicken katsu is one of the kitchen's standout staples. With its light, flaky crust and generous portion, it works equally well as a drinking companion or a heartier meal. Deep-fried items also include natto tempura and crackling-crisp deep-fried mehikari, offering distinct variations in texture.

Beyond fried specialties, daily chalkboard specials feature fresh seafood and seasonal small plates. Highlights include thick-sliced tuna and flounder sashimi, Saikyo-miso grilled sablefish, and intense heshiko salted sardines that pair neatly with drinks. These dishes drink well with Myoko, a mellow local sake from Niigata Prefecture.

The dining room provides table seating, and reservations can be arranged in advance. Drinks span beyond sake to beer, wine, and sparkling pours, setting the stage for an easygoing evening.
